Cantamaggio ("sing May") in Collepino, the greeting to Spring after the winter hibernation.

Cantamaggio has its roots in ancient pagan rituals related to the celebration of spring and the awakening of nature.

This festival, which corresponds to many other European traditions, marks the transition from winter to the beautiful season, a moment of rebirth and hope.

Over the centuries, the celebration has taken on Christian connotations, integrating with religious rites and festivities. However, the core of the festival has remained unchanged: a celebration of life, fertility, and community.

After the Mass (celebrating the Holy Trinity) and some delicate and inspired songs thanks to the mastery of the Properzio Philharmonic Choir, the festival will take on an increasingly secular and “profane” connotation… amidst wine and sausages, groups of singers (the maggiaioli), from all over Umbria and even from Marche, will walk through the streets of the village singing irreverent and entertaining popular songs, a true spectacle that involves the entire community.

It is an explosion of life, joyful, colorful, spontaneous, and fun… just like Spring!
